This week in safety: Catching up with the CPSC
April 30, 2010 3:35 PM
Swimsuit Luckily, there haven't been any baby fashion victims from the 7,000 kids bathing suits recalled today by the Gap. The tot-sized suits have an unfortunate design in which a plastic ring presses against the baby's throat posing a strangulation hazard. The Consumer Product Safety Commission says there have been two complaints but no incidents.

The swimsuits were sold in blue and white and red and white in infant sizes up to 24 months. They were sold at babyGap, GapKids, Gap, and Gap Outlet stores nationwide and online at www.gap.com from February 2010 through April 2010 for between $17 and $20. The Gap is offering refunds.

Jo-Ann Stores fined $50,000
Jo-Ann Stores of Hudson, Ohio, has agreed to pay a $50,000 civil penalty for allegedly importing and selling children's products that violated the federal lead paint ban. The penalty settlement (pdf) resolves CPSC staff allegations that Jo-Ann Stores knowingly imported and sold Robbie Ducky children's products that contained lead paint in excess of the federal government's regulatory limit from January through November 2007. At the time of the violations, the federal limit on lead in paint was 600 ppm (0.06 percent), higher than the current limit of 90 ppm (.009 percent).

Four Robbie Ducky products were recalled for violating lead limits including: 6,000 watering cans, 16,000 toy rakes, 97,000 gardening tools and 60 holiday globes.
