Simplicity and Graco-branded cribs recalled; one death involved
April 29, 2010 12:41 PM
Crib_Recall Two major crib recalls were announced today including one that involved the death of a one-year-old Massachusetts boy, the Consumer Product Safety Commission announced. All full-size Simplicity cribs with tubular metal mattress-support frames are being recalled because the frames can bend or break away from the crib sides. The death of the baby occurred when he became trapped between the mattress and the frame and suffocated. Thirteen other children have become entrapped or injured in the cribs.

Because Simplicity has long been out of business, the recall is being made by the retailers that sold the cribs including Walmart, Target, Babies 'R' Us and several other retailers nationwide. And because the company is defunct, the CPSC has no information on how many of the cribs were sold or when. But the model numbers to look for are: 8755, 8324, 4600, 8740, 8994, 8676 and 8910. (Some may have an additional letter that indicates color.)

Today's second recall is of 217,000 Graco-branded drop-side cribs made by LaJobi. As with many drop-sides, the hazard is that the hardware can break or fail, allowing the drop side to detach from the crib. The CPSC has gotten 99 reports of this happening including some in which children became entrapped. There were six reports of children falling when a drop-side detached including one report of a mild concussion.

The Graco recall involves nine styles of cribs; see the recall notice for all the model numbers. The cribs were sold at children's product stores and other retailers nationwide from February 2007 to March 2010 for between $140 and $200.

LaJobi is offering crib owners a retrofit kit that will immobilize the drop side. To get a kit, call (888) 842-2215 or visit LaJobi's Web site.

Simplicity cribs have proven to be problematic before. In fact, all Simplicity drop-side cribs have been recalled because of faulty hardware. The CPSC today renewed its call to parents to remove Simplicity cribs from their homes and warned: "Do not attempt to fix these cribs."

i had a crib collapse. the brackets holding the drop side up bent. i sent pictures and model numbers to consumer reports and all gov. agencies. 3 months after i was contacted by the product safety investigators wanting the crib...yea,like i was going to keep it forever. its pretty sad when it takes months for a response when children are at risk...shame on consumers and the goverment agencies involved...model was an evenflo #012616
