Something to frown about: 'Happy' cadmium bracelets
June 30, 2010 3:54 PM
Jewelty_recall Rings and bracelets given as trinkets to kids by doctors and dentists were recalled today because they contain high levels of cadmium. The 66,200 "happy" bracelets and 2,200 rings were distributed by SmileMakers and handed out in medical offices over the past five years. Can you say irony?

Cadmium is toxic if ingested by young children and can cause adverse health effects. The cadmium in the jewelry is in the metal charm of the bracelet as well as the metal ring.

Owned by Staples, SmileMakers supplies schools and healthcare providers with stickers, toys, novelties and other "fun stuff," according to its website. Parents are being advised by the Consumer Product Safety Commission to discard the free geegaws. SmileMakers is fielding questions at (877) 390-5470 or via e-mail sent to product.questions@smilemakers.com.

As if kids needed another reason to hate going to the doctor.

Were these bracelets made in China?

Why should this come as a surprise? As long as large corporations continue to chase the cheapest overseas manufactures, in countries that have little or no oversight of industry, this will continue to occur. You would think that Staples would have tested these products sometime during the past five years -- but perhaps not -- that would have cost money better reserved for executive bonuses!
