GIGROI_CadmiumFrogNecklaces[1]
A not-so-happy anniversary. It was six months ago today that the first cheap kids’ jewelry was recalled for high levels of cadmium. Importer FAF, Inc. pulled 55,000
Princess and the Frog necklaces that were sold at Walmart.

So dig through your kids’ jewelry boxes and dress-up trunks and kiss this toad goodbye. The recalled jewelry is shaped as a metal crown or frog pendant on a metal link chain necklace in a crown hinged box. Return the necklace to Walmart for a refund or exchange.

Cadmium can be toxic if ingested. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lists kidney disease, lung damage, and fragile bones among the effects of long-term exposure.

There are currently no set limits for cadmium in products other than toys. That’s likely to change very soon. After a series of recalls, there’s been a flurry of activity among the Consumer Product Safety Commission, retailers, Congress, and ASTM, the standard-setting organization.
