Salmonella poses a health risk to both the animals and their human care-takers. Cats who eat the tainted food may show signs of decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Pets may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting if not treated. Also, pets that don't exhibit these symptoms could become carriers that infect other animals and humans.

People can become infected with Salmonella if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the tainted pet food or surfaces exposed to it. Human symptoms of Salmonella poisoning are: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. The FDA warns that on rare occasions more serious illnesses—arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation and urinary tract symptoms—may arise.

Consumers are urged to discontinue use of the Salmonella-tainted cat food and seek professional help if they or their pets show signs of the food-borne illness.
