Recall: Multiple brands of gel fuel—burn and fire hazard
Sep 29, 2011 11:00 AM
Some of the gel fuel products in this recall, and
bottles of gel fuel also recalled earlier this month.

Several makers of gel fuel for decorative fire bowls have recalled close to 132,000 bottles and jugs of the fuel due to burn and fire hazards, the Consumer Products Safety Commission has announced. The recalled products are made by Bond Manufacturing, Fuel Barons, Real Flame, and Smart Solar.

Fuel Barons received one report of an incident where a man sustained second-degree burns to his hand and wrist. The gel fuel can unexpectedly ignite and splatter people and objects when it is poured into a firepot that is still burning. This can occur if the consumer does not see the flame or is not aware that the firepot is still ignited. Gel fuel that splatters and ignites can pose fire and burn risks to consumers that can be fatal.

Recalled products include:

Each of the four recall notices includes specific model numbers, product pictures and the different container sizes of the multiple products being recalled by each company.

This group of recalls follows an announcement earlier this month of some 2 million containers of fuel gel also recalled because of the burn and fire hazard posed by the products. At that time, the CPSC reported 65 incidents where splattering, burning fuel gel resulted in two deaths and 34 people hospitalized with second and third degree burns to the face, chest, hands, arms or legs.

All four manufacturers associated with this most recent recall were also part of the CPCS's announced recall at the beginning of this month.

Back in June, the CPSC had issued a recall for Napa Home & Garden gel fuels and announced an investigation into firepot burn accidents. The agency also issued a general alert to consumers, warning of the burn hazards posed by all fuel gels.

If you have been injured by burning fuel gel or had a recent incident with gel-based fuels and would like to share it with the CPSC, visit the agency's website: www.SaferProducts.gov.
