The Consumer Products Safety Commission has issued a recall of 1.6 million containers of various gel fuels sold by Bird Brain of Ypsilanti, Mich. The jelly-like fuels can splash and ignite when poured into lit firepots, potentially causing serious burn injuries to unsuspecting consumers .

In June, the CPSC investigated the dangers of firepot fuels, which led to a recall of Napa Home & Garden gel fuels. Last month, the CPSC issued a broader recall of 2 million bottles of fuel gels made by various manufacturers—including Bird Brain.

Today's recall notice details the various Bird Brain gel fuels which were sold at major retailers such as Sears, K-Mart, Target, Amazon.com and Buy.com as well as independent retailers. The firepot fuels were sold from October 2008 through August 2011 in individual bottles (for about $8 to $18) and in multiple-bottle packages (for about $18 to $136). Bird Brain is aware of 20 incidents involving its gel fuels and reports 11 injuries involving burns ranging in severity from first- to third-degree.

Consumers with the Bird Brain firepot fuels are urged to immediately stop using the flammable gel fuels and return them to the company for a full refund.
