This year, popular Halloween getups will include the living dead, as well as pop culture icons and movie characters. But no matter what your child wants to dress up as, a few costume safety tricks can lead to a safe and fun night of treats.
So what's hot this Halloween? More than 2.6 million men, women and children plan to dress as zombies, according to a survey by the National Retail Federation. Other living-dead costumes such as vampires are also popular, but so are princess costumes. According to PriceGrabber, however, Halloween shoppers are again smitten with Lady Gaga, Snooki and a slew of Disney characters.
Below we've gathered a few safety tips for your child's costume so you can make Halloween a safe and fun-filled fright night.
Safe costume tips:
- Buy costumes that are labeled “flame resistant.”
- Avoid baggy, billowing skirts and cloaks that might brush against a candle-lit jack-o-lantern or luminary.
- Be cautious when using makeup for face paint. Much of it is not FDA-approved and could trigger allergic reactions.
- Never use decorative contact lenses; they can result in severe eye infections.
- Make sure your kids won’t trip over their costumes and avoid accessories like swords and canes that have sharp edges.
- Be wary of masks that could potentially block your child's vision.
