Recall: Giant Eagle shredded iceberg lettuce—Listeria
Oct 14, 2011 1:30 PM

The supermarket chain Giant Eagle recalled its name brand, Farmer's Market Shredded Iceberg Lettuce this week due to potential listeria contamination, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has announced.

Giant Eagle was told by the FDA of listeria monocytogenes found during a routine random sample test of Giant Eagle Farmer's Market eight ounce packages of Shredded Iceberg Lettuce. Listeria monocytogenes, an organism that can cause food poisoning, has recently been blamed for 23 deaths in the United States due to bacteria-laden cantaloupes from Colorado.

According to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, the Giant Eagle recall includes thousands of bags of shredded iceberg lettuce (UPC 3003430195) and sandwich trays, including the following:

  • Giant Eagle Large Italian Sandwich Ring (UPC 23755100000)
  • Giant Eagle Mini Italian Sandwich Ring (UPC 24755500000)
  • Giant Eagle Large New York Sandwich Ring (UPC 22755100000)
  • Giant Eagle Mini New York Sandwich Ring (UPC 25755500000)
  • Giant Eagle Large All America Sandwich Ring (UPC 21755100000)
  • Giant Eagle Mini All American Sandwich Ring (UPC 26755500000)

After the recall was announced, Giant Eagle implemented a register sale block, removed affected products from store shelves, and called customers who had purchased the products with a Giant Eagle loyalty card. If you have questions or concerns, call Giant Eagle Customer Care at 1-800-553-2324 or River Ranch at 1-800-762-7708.

Listeriosis affects primarily persons of advanced age, pregnant women, newborns and adults with weakened immune systems.
