The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued a recall alert for more than 6,000 Mophie Juice Pack Air rechargeable battery packs. The lithium polymer batteries, which are designed to be used as external cases for Apple iPod Touch players, can overheat and possibly burn consumers.

According to the CPSC, Mophie, of Paw Paw, Mich., has received 110 reports of these external battery cases becoming warm to the touch. Forty-four of the consumer complaints include reports of Mophie cases deforming from the heat. In nine incidents, the overheating external iPod Touch batteries caused minor burns.

The battery cases were sold for about $50 at various retailers, such as B&H Photo and Barnes & Noble, as well as online at Amazon and Mophie's website. The recalled Mophie battery packs can be further identified by the serial numbers printed on a label located on the inside of each case.

Only Mophie Juice Pack Air cases with the first five serial number characters TR113 through TR120 are affect by this safety recall.

Consumers with a recalled external battery case are urged to stop using the product and contact Mophie (toll-free: 877-308-4581 website: www.mophie.com/exchange) for instructions on receiving a free replacement.
