Recall: Tassimo coffeemakers for burn hazard
Feb 9, 2012 12:00 PM

Nearly 2 million Tassimo coffeemakers are being recalled in North America according to the U.S Consumer Product Safety Commission and its Canadian counterpart, Health Canada. The Tassimo Single-Cup Brewers from BSH Home Appliances uses plastic disks, or T Discs, which can burst during brewing and spray hot water and coffee grounds or tea leaves onto consumers, posing a burn danger.

There have been 140 reports of cases where the Tassimo machines have burned consumers during the beverage brewing process. In 37 of the incidents, victims received second degree burns. And in one case, a 10-year old Minnesota girl had to be hospitalized after receiving second-degree burns on her face and neck.

Both national safety agencies are warning consumers to immediately stop using the recalled Tassimo coffeemakers. The CPSC and Health Canada also recently warned consumers to stop using 4 million recalled Tassimo T Discs, single-serving plastic containers of coffee used in the brewing machines.

This current recall involves Bosch and Tassimo Professional branded coffee brewers. BSH Home Appliances is recalling specifically:

Those cofeemakers were sold at department, mass merchandise and home improvement stores nationwide and on various websites, including www.tassimodirect.com, from June 2008 through February 2012 for between $100 and $250.

The Tassimo Professional brewers were only sold in black and only to hotels and food service companies.

According to the CPSC, BSH Home Appliances believes there are approximately 835,000 of its recalled Tassimo machines in the U.S. and about 900,000 in Canada.

Consumers with the recalled Bosch-branded Tassimo single-cup coffeemakers should stop using the machines. They can also order and install a free replacement T disc holder from Tassimo.
