Westinghouse ceiling fans recalled due to electrical shock and fire hazards
Mar 22, 2012 9:00 AM
One of the five models of ceiling fans being
recalled by Westinghouse Lighting due to
electrical shock, overheating and fire dangers.

Approximately 7,000 ceiling fans are being recalled by Westinghouse Lighting Corp., said the Consumer Product Safety Commission. The fan and light kits come with 60-watt lightbulbs, which exceed the fixtures' wattage ratings, posing a risk of overheating, fire and electric shock to consumers.

There have been no reports of injuries or damage caused by the recalled Westinghouse ceiling fans. However, the CPSC recommends consumers should stop using the fan and light fixtures until receiving two correct, 40-watt replacement lightbulbs from Westinghouse for free.

Consumer Reports' Guide to energy-saving and green living advises that ceiling fans can be cost-efficient means to keep cool—especially when used in conjunction with the right air conditioners. But to find the right type of lightbulb—including energy- and cost-efficient CFLs and LED bulbs—for such fixtures, consult the Consumer Reports lightbulb buying guide.

This CPSC safety recall involves five models of Westinghouse Lighting ceiling fans (see chart) with 24-, 30- and 42-inch diameter blades. The item number is printed on the fan's motor housing while "Westinghouse" is printed on the fan's ceiling canopy.

They were sold at home improvement and hardware stores, home centers and electrical product suppliers nationwide and online at Amazon.com from January 2011 through January 2012 for between $135 and $150.

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled ceiling fans and contact Westinghouse Lighting (toll-free: 888-417-6222 Web: www.westinghouselighting.com) for the free replacement lightbulbs and additional information.
