Big Lots has recalled about 70,500 portable space heaters and portable oscillating space heaters because they can overheat and melt, posing a fire or electric shock hazard.
The recall is for two models of 1500 watt Climate Keeper ceramic heaters. Big Lots has received four reports of the space heaters overheating and melting, but no reports of injury, fire or property damage, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
Both recalled models have a fan, two dials on top, a wire mesh panel in front and the name "Climate Keeper" plus a label on the bottom with the model number and ETL 3130679. Model #FH107A has gray plastic housing. Model #PTC-902T is an oscillating heater with silver-gray plastic housing, a molded handle on top of the heater and a small extra button between the two dials that controls the oscillation.
The recalled heaters were sold exclusively at Big Lots from September 2010 through March 2012 for about $20 for the first model (#FH107A) and $25 for the oscillating model (#PTC-902T).
If you have one of these heaters (perhaps packed away for the summer months), you should return it to Big Lots for a refund. For more information, call Big Lots at 866-244-5687, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., ET, or visit www.biglots.com.
We've previously reported that portable space heaters cause an estimated 1,700 home fires, 180 injuries, and 70 deaths each year. If you have one in your home, there are important safety issues to consider, especially if you have small children or pets. See our space heater buying guide and Ratings for more.
