Nearly a quarter-million 2006-2007 sport-utility vehicles from General Motors and Isuzu are being recalled, said the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The problem: Corrosive water may leak into the vehicle doors, short-circuit the door locks and power window electronics, possibly causing a fire in the doors.
The recall stems from an NHTSA investigation of door fires in 2006-07 Chevolet Trailblazer SUVs back in February. The safety agency's probe, however, has determined that the issue exists in the following 2006-07 sport-utility vehicle models:
- Buick Rainier
- Chevrolet Tailblazer
- GMC Envoy
- Isuzu Ascender
- SAAB 9-7X
The recalled SUVs, which include Canadian models, were all made by General Motors. In the United States, the affected models sold or currently registered in the following states are of particular concern since corrosive chemicals are used to melt ice and snow from the roadways during winter months:
- Connecticut
- Delaware
- Illinois
- Indiana
- Iowa
- Maine
- Maryland
- Massachusetts
- Michigan
- Minnesota
- Missouri
- New Hampshire
- New Jersey
- New York
- Ohio
- Pennsylvania
- Rhode Island
- Vermont
- West Virginia
- Wisconsin
- Washington, D.C.
NHTSA says an appropriate remedy plan is still being finalized, however, it is expected that dealers will replace the door electronics free of charge.
