Safety 1st toilet and cabinet locks recalled due to locking failures

About 183,000 toilet locks and 685,000 cabinet locks from Safety 1st are being recalled, warned two government agencies, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Health Canada. The locks fail to keep children out of toilet bowls and prevent drowning nor do they secure household cabinets which may contain harmful home cleaners and other chemicals.

Mad cow case highlights need for further investigation and better testing

Following the U.S. Department of Agriculture announcement last week of a new case of mad cow disease in California, Consumers Union, the advocacy arm of Consumer Reports, today called on the USDA and the Food and Drug Administration to take new measures to detect and prevent mad cow disease in U.S. beef and dairy cows.

Viking recalls dishwashers due to fire hazard

Viking Range Corporation of Greenwood, Miss., has recalled about 2,000 Viking dishwashers because an electrical component in the dishwasher can overheat, posing a fire hazard. Viking has received 21 reports of incidents, including five reports of property damage from fires.

Planters peanuts recalled due to possible exposure to bad water during production

Kraft Foods Group, is recalling Planters Cocktail Peanuts sold in 12-ounce canisters because there is a possibility that the peanuts were exposed to water not intended for use in food during the production process. Approximately 3,000 cases of the recalled Planters peanuts were shipped to retail customers across the U.S. and Puerto Rico.

Office Depot leather desk chairs recalled due to fall hazard

Office Depot is recalling 307,000 of its Brand Biella leather desk chairs in the U.S. and another 12,000 in Canada because the weld connecting the seat plate to the gas lift can fail, causing the chair to separate from the base and posing a fall hazard.

Approximately 900,000 Safety 1st Push 'N Snap cabinet locks are being recalled by importer Dorel Juvenile Group (DJG) of Columbus, Ind. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the safety latches can be disengaged by children, giving them access to the dangerous items meant to be secured within the locked cabinets.

Westinghouse ceiling fans recalled due to electrical shock and fire hazards

Approximately 7,000 ceiling fans are being recalled by Westinghouse Lighting Corp., said the Consumer Product Safety Commission. The fan and light kits come with 60-watt lightbulbs, which exceed the fixtures' wattage ratings, posing a risk of overheating, fire and electric shock to consumers.

227,000 LED nightlights recalled for overheating and burn hazards

LED nightlights imported from China by American Tack & Hardware Co. in Saddle Brook, N.J., are being recalled, said the Consumer Products Safety Commission. About 227,000 of the plug-in LEDs have an electrical short circuit that can cause the lights to overheat and melt, posing fire and burn hazards to consumers.
