Still struggling to find that perfect Valentine's Day present for your sweetheart? On Saturday Feb. 11, T-Mobile has a tempting offer for all you last-minute tech gift shoppers: The carrier's entire stable of 4G smart phones—and some tablet computers—will be offered with rebates that essentially eliminate the cost of the device. But is it a really good deal for shoppers?

For one day only, the carrier is offering up to $500 for new customers and current subscribers eligible for phone upgrades who choose a new T-Mobile 4G smart phone. And among the options are some of the top smart phones tested by Consumer Reports, including: the Samsung Galaxy S II, the HTC Amaze 4G, and the T-Mobile Sidekick 4G. (See Consumer Reports' latest Ratings of smart phones for the full list of recommend models for T-mobile service.)

Also available: The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and the T-Mobile SpringBoard, two of the recommended tablet computers in our latest Ratings online.

Of course, shoppers need to be aware of the usual caveats. The offer requires a new two-year T-Mobile contract, which start at $70 per month for 200MB of data. And customers will still have to first pay for the new mobile device and later recoup its cost via a mail-in rebate from T-Mobile.

But perhaps the most important consideration? Contract service from T-Mobile—or any other major U.S. phone service provider—isn't highly regarded among consumers. In our latest survey on wireless cell phone survey, our experts noted.

When it comes to standard cell-phone service (meaning billed monthly, often under a contract), the most satisfying carriers in our Ratings were smaller [providers].

And where did T-Mobile rank with consumers in our latest Ratings of cell phone service? Nearly last-place.

If you have a Consumer Reports subscription, you can check out the entire Jan. 2011 report, Best phones & service.

Super Bowl XLVI video: Is a plasma or LCD TV best for watching the Big Game?

Believe it or not, there's still time to buy a new TV before the Super Bowl airs this Sunday! If you are making that last minute purchase, Consumer Reports television expert Jim Willcox has some tips for which technology—plasma or LCD—is best for viewing sports in general, and the Big Game in particular. Each has pros and cons; take a look at our video for his tech tips.

Some buying advice for you hurried shoppers:

Make sure the retailer can guarantee delivery— and set-up, if you need it—before kickoff time.

See if you can get a 30-day price match, since TV prices could start to fall right after the game as retailers start clearing out 2011 sets to make way for 2012 models.

If it's your first HDTV purchase, make sure your cable or satellite receiver is an HD model, or make sure you can pick up a new one and get it activated in time for the game.

Skip the extended warranty and pricey cables. Consider buying the TV with a credit card that doubles the manufacturer's warranty, or from a retailer (such as Costco) that does the same.

Beware of interest-free promotions. It's fine to take advantage of no-interest deals that let you spread payments over time, but make sure you pay off the balance at least a month before the end of the deal. If you fail to pay the final balance before the term ends, you're usually responsible for all the interest on the full purchase price of the TV, not just the amount you still owe. And often the interest rates on store cards are much higher what you'd pay on a standard bank credit card.

More than half of adult cell phone owners used their phones while they were in a store during the 2011 holiday season to seek help with purchasing decisions, the Pew Research Center reported today.

As part of a new study, the Pew Research Center Internet and American Life Project interviewed a nationally representative sample of 1,000 adults living in the U.S. about their shopping habits over the course of a 30-day period before and after Christmas.

According to the study, 33 percent used their phone for online information while inside a brick and mortar store for either product reviews or pricing information. Online price matching and looking up online reviews frequently went hand in hand.

Here's a breakdown of how consumers used their cell phones as a shopping tool while in stores:

38 percent of cell phone owners used their phone to call a friend for advice about a purchase they were considering making.

24 percent of cell phone owners used their phone to look up reviews of a product online.

25 percent of adult cell phone owners used their phones to look up the price of a product online to see if they could get a better price somewhere else.

Perhaps not surprisingly, of those interviewed, cell phone owners age 18 to 49 were significantly more likely to use their phones to search for online product reviews, when compared to cell phone owners 50 and older.

In an apparent effort to woo new customers who only want the most basic of cable service and retain some current subscribers who are thinking of cutting the cable cord, Cox Communications has become the latest cable provider to jump on the low-price bandwagon, rolling out its $35 per month TV Economy offering.

The channel lineup differs from market to market, but all will include local channels and about 20 additional basic cable channels like CNN, E!, Food Network and Discovery.

The biggest absence from the channels being offered is ESPN, which is generally the most expensive basic channel for a provider to carry at around a reported $4.76 per month per subscriber.

Cox's price of $35 per month for TV Economy makes it the most expensive of the recently launched not-quite-bargain-basement services. Comcast's similar MyTVchoice service is only $25 per month and Time Warner Cable's TV Essentials package is $30 per month. None of these services carry ESPN.

<cu:fulltext>In an apparent effort to woo new customers who only want the most basic of cable service and retain some current subscribers who are thinking of cutting the cable cord, Cox Communications has become the latest cable provider to jump on the low-price bandwagon, rolling out its $35 per month TV Economy offering.

Of course, since many U.S. consumers have very little control of which cable providers they can select from, comparing the price differences between these services may be pointless.

Cox does also offer a $20 per month TV Starter package that is basically a way for subscribers to get local channels without having to worry about over-the-air reception.

There are ways to cut your entertainment bill now, however. In addition to seeking out bundling deals, which tie together home telephone, Internet access, and television services, you can simply ask for reduced monthly fees from your TV service provider.

But how do you find the best-performing set for your needs—especially with tons of models to choose from, ranging from inexpensive headphones that come with your device to wireless models that cost hundreds of dollars and come with celebrity endorsements?

Consumer Reports senior editor Jim Willcox shared with Dave Graveline a few shopping tips for finding the best headphones. Also check out Consumer Reports' video: Testing celebrity headphones to find out if pricey models such as Monster Heartbeats from Lady Gaga performed well against other models in our Ratings of headphones.
